John Henry Dearle began his long career with Morris & Co. as a young sales assistant in the firm's Oxford Street shop. William Morris took him under his wing and trained him to work firstly in the stained glass studio in Queen Square and then as his tapestry assistant. His natural talent for design led to him becoming, alongside May Morris, the key designer for embroidery patterns at Morris & Co. After the death of William Morris in 1896, Dearle became Art Director of Morris & Co. until his retirement.
