The art of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1865–1933) is rooted in symbolism and Celtic imagery, and influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Among her best-known works are the gessoed panels created for The Hill House, the Glasgow residence her husband Charles Rennie Mackintosh, designed for art patron Catherine Cranston. The Four Queens, representing the four card suits, originally graced the walls of the Hill House card room and are now in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Queen of Diamonds, 1909
Queen of Spades, 1909
Queen of Hearts, 1909
