Compton was designed by John Henry Dearle for Morris & Co. in 1895. Dearle (1859-1932) took over as Art Director and chief designer at Morris & Co. after the death of William Morris in 1896. Dearle began his lifelong career with the company as a 17-year-old shop assistant in the Morris & Co. Oxford Street shop and became Morris's apprentice, partner and successor.
