Trellis was designed by William Morris in 1862 and was his first design for wallpaper. The pattern was inspired by the rose trellis in the gardens of his home Red House in Bexleyheath, now owned by the National Trust. Red House, designed by Morris's friend and business partner Philip Webb in 1859, was the only one of Morris's beloved homes that he had a part in designing and that he owned. The birds in the design were drawn by Webb as Morris felt he wasn't very good at drawing animals. Morris said the five years he lived at Red House were amongst the happiest in his life.
